I basically have a whole library of graphic novels and trade paperbacks on my shelves, which, if nothing else, is really fun to stare at. This list does not include the more-than-a-dozen shoe boxes’ worth of comics I have sitting around. Authors have been excluded from this list, due to the complex number of people involved in the creation of comics. Especially recommended titles are in bold, though to be honest, I barely remember what a lot of these are even about anymore.

If you are looking for somewhere to start in comics, The Sandman and Fables are the cream of the crop for mature readers. If you just want a self-contained read, grab The Contract with God Trilogy or Blankets. Bone is excellent for the slightly younger crowd. And if you want super heroes, just find a comic book store and buy whatever issue of Amazing Spider-Man is on the stands.
